How to Sell Digital Downloads on Etsy: A Beginner's Guide

Want to learn how to sell digital downloads on Etsy but aren’t sure where to start? The good news is that you don’t need inventory, boxes, or trips to the post office. You can create a digital product once, upload it to Etsy, and potentially sell it again and again.

That’s one of the reasons I love selling digital downloads on Etsy.

You create the product once, upload it to Etsy, and customers can purchase and download it without you having to physically ship anything. And there are so many things you can create.

Some of my personal favorites are spreadsheets, Canva templates, and kids’ activities, but those are only the beginning.

The best part? With AI tools available today, creating digital products is becoming easier and faster. You still need a good idea, your own creativity, and a product that’s genuinely useful, but you don’t necessarily have to start with a blank page anymore.

So, if you’ve been wondering how to sell digital products on Etsy, here’s how I would get started.

What Are Digital Downloads on Etsy?

Digital downloads are products customers purchase online and receive as digital files rather than physical products.

Think about something you’ve downloaded before: a printable planner, an invitation template, a spreadsheet, a coloring page, or a checklist.

Someone had to create it.

And that person can sell the same digital product again and again.

That’s what makes this business model so interesting. Instead of creating a new physical item every time somebody places an order, you can create one useful digital product and potentially sell multiple copies of it.

What Digital Products Can You Sell on Etsy?

This is where it gets fun because there are lots of possibilities.

My advice is to start with something you actually enjoy creating, or something you already know how to use.

Personally, I love these three categories:

Spreadsheets

If you’re comfortable with Excel or Google Sheets, spreadsheets can make great digital products.

You could create:

  • Budget spreadsheets
  • Debt payoff trackers
  • Wedding planning spreadsheets
  • Travel planners
  • Business expense trackers
  • Savings challenges
  • Student planners
  • Content calendars
  • Small business trackers

And these aren’t just theoretical ideas. Current Etsy results show significant activity around spreadsheet products. For example, wedding planning spreadsheets, debt payoff calculators, travel-planning spreadsheets, student planners, co-parenting trackers, and monthly planning spreadsheets all appear among popular digital listings.

The trick is not necessarily inventing a completely new type of spreadsheet.

Instead, ask yourself:

Who am I creating this spreadsheet for, and what specific problem can I help them solve?

A generic budget spreadsheet is one thing.

A budget spreadsheet designed specifically for wedding planning, college students, freelancers, or families saving for a vacation is much more specific.

And that specificity can help when you’re trying to stand out.

Canva Templates

Another favorite of mine is Canva templates.

If you already enjoy designing in Canva, think about the things other people need but may not want to design themselves.

You could create social media templates, planners, invitations, workbooks, business forms, media kits, price lists, checklists, wedding materials, calendars, or printable organizers.

The buyer gets something that’s already designed and can customize it instead of starting from scratch.

That saves them time—and saving someone time is often a great starting point for a digital product.

Kids’ Activities and Printables

If you enjoy creating things for kids, there are so many directions you can take this.

Think about:

  • Coloring pages
  • Matching games
  • Scavenger hunts
  • Learning activities
  • Preschool worksheets
  • Alphabet activities
  • Number activities
  • Birthday games
  • Holiday activities
  • Road-trip activity packs

You can also niche these down by age, occasion, season, or learning goal.

Instead of simply making a “kids printable,” you might create a Halloween scavenger hunt for kids, preschool alphabet activity pack, or road-trip activity bundle for ages 4–7.

Again, you’re thinking about a specific person searching for a specific solution.

What Are Some Bestselling Digital Products on Etsy?

There isn’t one magical product that automatically becomes a bestseller. Trends change, competition changes, and Etsy search results change too.

But looking at Etsy’s current marketplace gives us some useful clues.

Digital planners continue to have a strong presence, including Goodnotes planners, ADHD-friendly planners, teacher planners, budget planners, wedding planners, digital stickers, and printable organizers. Etsy’s current results also show popular spreadsheet-style products such as wedding budget trackers, travel planners, baby shower organizers, debt payoff calculators, student planners, and monthly productivity trackers.

So rather than asking only:

“What digital product sells the most?”

I would ask:

“What are people already buying that I could create for a specific audience or problem?”

That’s a much better place to start.

How to Create a Digital Product to Sell on Etsy

You don’t need to create 100 products before opening your shop.

Start with one.

Choose a category you understand and then think about a problem your product could solve.

For example, let’s say you like spreadsheets.

Maybe you decide to make a vacation budget spreadsheet.

You could include sections for flights, hotels, food, activities, transportation, shopping, and an overall vacation budget.

Create it in Google Sheets or Excel, test everything, make sure the formulas work, and give the customer clear instructions.

Then make it look good.

Because functionality matters, but presentation matters too.

Once that first product is finished, you can start thinking about related products. Your vacation budget spreadsheet could eventually become a complete travel-planning spreadsheet, packing checklist, itinerary template, or travel bundle.

Suddenly, one idea has turned into an entire collection.

PLR (Private Label Rights) products

You also don’t have to create every digital product completely from scratch. Another option is to use PLR (Private Label Rights) products. PLR products are pre-created digital resources that come with specific licensing rights that may allow you to customize, rebrand, and sell them as your own finished product. Depending on the license, you might change the colors, fonts, wording, graphics, pages, or layout and turn the original resource into something that fits your own audience and brand. Just make sure you read the PLR license carefully, because every seller can set different rules about what you’re allowed to change, sell, or redistribute.

PLR can be especially helpful when you have plenty of ideas but don’t always have the time to create everything from zero. It gives you a starting point—and then you can add your own creativity and make the product your own.

Using AI to Help Create Digital Products

This is one of the things that makes creating digital products especially interesting right now.

AI can make parts of the process much faster.

Instead of staring at a blank screen wondering what should go inside your product, you can use AI to help brainstorm and organize your ideas.

For example, if you’re creating a kids’ road-trip activity pack, AI could help you brainstorm age-appropriate activity ideas.

If you’re building a wedding-planning spreadsheet, you could use AI to brainstorm expense categories or checklist items.

If you’re designing a Canva planner, AI can help you think through what pages someone might actually need.

You can also use AI to help with:

  • Product ideas and niche research
  • Brainstorming sections and features
  • Instructions for customers
  • Listing descriptions
  • Product titles and keywords
  • FAQ ideas
  • Marketing copy
  • Content ideas for promoting your products

But I wouldn’t simply generate something and immediately put it up for sale.

Review it.

Customize it.

Test it.

Make it useful.

And make sure you have the necessary rights to anything included in the finished product.

AI should help you create something better and faster—not replace the part where you actually think about your customer.

How to Register as a Seller on Etsy

Before you can upload your first digital product, you’ll need to open your Etsy shop.

The good news? You don’t necessarily need to have a formal company to get started. Etsy allows you to register for Etsy Payments as an individual or sole proprietor or as an incorporated business. Etsy itself doesn’t require sellers to have a business license, although you are responsible for following the business, tax, and licensing laws that apply where you live.

Another important thing to know: Etsy currently requires you to set up a new shop through a desktop web browser. After your shop is open, you can use the Etsy Seller app to manage it.

Start by going to Etsy.com/sell and selecting Get Started.

From there, Etsy will walk you through the setup process.

1. Create or Sign In to Your Etsy Account

You’ll need an Etsy account before you can become a seller. You can create a new account or use an existing Etsy account.

This will become the account you use to manage your shop, listings, orders, payments, and other seller information.

2. Choose Your Shop Preferences

Next, Etsy will ask you to select your:

  • Shop language
  • Shop country
  • Shop currency

Pay particular attention to the language you choose. Etsy says your default shop language can’t be changed later, although you can add additional languages.

You’ll also want to choose your currency carefully because Etsy notes that currency-conversion fees may apply if your bank account uses a different currency.

3. Choose Your Etsy Shop Name

Now comes the fun part—choosing your shop name.

Your Etsy shop name needs to be 4–20 characters, can’t contain spaces or special characters, can’t already be in use, and can’t infringe on someone else’s trademark.

Don’t let choosing the perfect name stop you from getting started, though. You can build your branding, logo, banner, and overall look after opening your shop.

4. Set Up Etsy Payments

If you’re going to sell something, you need somewhere for that money to go!

You’ll connect a bank account so Etsy can send you your earnings. Etsy will also ask whether you’re registering as an individual/sole proprietorship or an incorporated business.

The exact payment-verification process depends on your country. For example, U.S. sellers currently verify their bank details through Plaid, while sellers in certain countries use Payoneer.

One important limitation to check before doing all this work: you can only open a new Etsy shop in a country where Etsy Payments is currently available.

5. Add Your Billing Information

You’ll also need to provide Etsy with a credit or debit card for billing.

Why?

Because selling on Etsy comes with fees, including listing fees and potentially other seller charges. Your billing information gives Etsy a way to collect amounts you owe that aren’t covered by your Etsy payment balance.

6. Pay the Etsy Shop Set-Up Fee, If Applicable

Here’s something new sellers should know before they start: Etsy may charge a one-time, non-refundable shop set-up fee.

There isn’t one universal amount I can tell you to budget for because Etsy says the cost varies by location. If a set-up fee applies to your shop, Etsy will show you the amount during the registration process before you finish opening your store.

This is separate from the regular $0.20 listing fee you’ll pay when you publish a product.

7. Verify Your Identity

Etsy also requires new sellers to verify their identity.

Etsy currently uses a third-party company called Persona for this process. You’ll generally need a valid government-issued photo ID and a selfie so your identity can be verified.

Depending on your country, accepted identification can include a driver’s license, state ID, passport, or permanent resident card.

Here’s one detail worth checking before you start: the name on your ID needs to match the name on the bank account you’re using to get paid.

Having your ID, banking information, and phone nearby before you begin can make the registration process much easier.

8. Turn On Two-Factor Authentication

Etsy requires sellers to set up two-factor authentication (2FA) as an additional security measure.

You can receive verification codes through an authenticator app, SMS, or phone call, although Etsy recommends using an authenticator app.

Once you’ve completed these steps, you can open your shop and start working on your storefront and first listing.

And don’t worry if your shop doesn’t look beautiful yet.

You can go back and add your logo, shop banner, About section, policies, and other branding afterward. Your first priority is getting the foundation in place so you can start adding those digital products you’ve been creating.

How to Create a Digital Listing on Etsy

Once your product is ready, it’s time to actually list it.

From Etsy.com, you can then go to Shop Manager → Listings → Add a listing, complete the listing information, and select Publish.

For a digital product, make sure you identify it as a digital file rather than a physical item.

Then work through your listing carefully.

Create a new listing in Etsy

1. Create Your Product Images

Your customer can’t physically pick up a digital product before buying it, so your listing images have an important job.

Show them exactly what they’re getting.

Use mockups, screenshots, close-ups, and examples of different pages or features. Etsy currently allows up to 20 photos and two short videos per listing, use them all!

2. Choose the Right Category

Choose the category that most closely describes your product and identify it as a digital item.

This helps Etsy understand what you’re selling and where your listing belongs.

  1. Write Your Title and Description

Your listing should make it immediately clear what the product is and who it’s for.

Don’t just call something:

Budget Spreadsheet

Be more descriptive.

Something like:

Wedding Budget Spreadsheet | Google Sheets Wedding Expense Tracker & Planning Template

Now both the shopper and Etsy have much more information about the product.

In your description, explain what customers receive, what the product helps them do, how they access it, what programs they need, and anything they should know before purchasing.

  1. Add Your Tags

Think about what someone would actually type into Etsy when searching for your product.

Etsy currently allows sellers to add up to 13 tags to describe an item, and Etsy specifically recommends using terms shoppers might search for.

So use them!

  1. Upload Your Digital Files

Now it’s time to upload what your customer will receive after purchasing.

A good option is to provide your customer with a PDF file, even when the product you’re selling is actually a spreadsheet or Canva template. The PDF can act as a simple instruction sheet that tells the buyer exactly how to access and use their purchase.

For example, if you’re selling a Canva template, you can create a PDF that says something like “Access Your Template,” include a clickable link to the Canva template, and add a few simple instructions explaining how to open and customize it.

You can do the same thing with a Google Sheets spreadsheet. Instead of trying to deliver the working spreadsheet directly, your PDF can include the link customers need to access or make their own copy of the spreadsheet, along with instructions for getting started.

You can also upload files such as PDFs or JPGs directly when those are the actual products you’re selling—for example, printable worksheets, kids’ activities, wall art, checklists, or planners.

I really like using a PDF as the delivery file because it gives you space to make the customer experience a little better. Besides the product link, you can include:

  • Simple instructions for accessing and using the product
  • A clickable link to the Canva template, spreadsheet, or other resource
  • Important information about what the customer can and cannot do with the product
  • Printing or editing instructions, when applicable
  • Your shop name and contact information
  • A thank-you message and even a link back to your Etsy shop

Before publishing your listing, test every link inside the PDF. Open the file as if you were the customer and make sure the links work, the permissions are correct, and the buyer can access the product without requesting permission from you.

That little extra step can save you—and your customers—a lot of frustration later.

Add a digital file on Etsy

  1. Set Your Price and Publish

Finally, choose your price, double-check the entire listing, preview everything, and publish.

Your first listing is live!

Etsy notes that a newly published listing can take up to 48 hours to appear in its search results and categories, so don’t panic if you don’t immediately find it in search.

How Much Does It Cost to Sell Digital Downloads on Etsy?

This is important because Etsy isn’t completely free.

As of this writing, Etsy charges $0.20 USD to publish a listing, and the listing lasts for four months unless it sells or is renewed. Etsy also charges a 6.5% transaction fee on the total order amount.

There are additional costs to consider, too.

Etsy charges payment-processing fees, which can vary depending on your country. Some sellers may also encounter Offsite Ads fees, taxes, or country-specific regulatory fees. Etsy also says a one-time, non-refundable shop set-up fee may apply, with the amount varying by location and displayed during shop setup.

That means you shouldn’t look at a $5 sale and assume you keep the entire $5.

Factor Etsy’s fees into your pricing.

The good news with digital products is that you generally don’t have the same per-order materials, packaging, and shipping costs associated with physical products.

Don’t Try to Create Everything

This is probably one of the easiest mistakes to make.

You open Etsy, see thousands of different digital products, and suddenly you’re thinking:

“Maybe I should make planners…and spreadsheets…and invitations…and kids’ worksheets…and social media templates…”

No.

At least not at first.

Pick something you like.

Create a good product.

Then create another product that makes sense next to it.

If you love spreadsheets, maybe your shop becomes known for really useful spreadsheets.

If you love creating kids’ activities, build a collection around that.

If Canva is your happy place, start experimenting with templates.

You don’t need to sell every possible digital product.

You need to find the intersection between what you enjoy creating and what people actually want to buy.

Can You Really Make Money Selling Digital Downloads on Etsy?

Yes, people do sell digital downloads on Etsy, but that doesn’t mean every product will sell—or that uploading a few templates automatically creates passive income.

There’s competition.

You’ll need to experiment with your products, keywords, pricing, images, and niches.

Some listings may do nothing.

Another product might surprise you.

That’s why I like the idea of starting small.

Your first goal doesn’t have to be creating a massive Etsy business.

Your first goal can simply be:

Create one useful digital product and publish it.

Then learn from what happens.

FAQs

What digital products can I sell on Etsy?

You can sell many types of digital products, including spreadsheets, printables, planners, templates, digital artwork, invitations, educational activities, checklists, trackers, and other downloadable products, provided they comply with Etsy’s current seller and creativity policies.

This is one of the best parts about selling instant digital downloads.

When someone purchases your digital product and their payment is confirmed, Etsy makes the files you uploaded to the listing available to the buyer automatically. The customer can access their files through the Purchases section of their Etsy account, and Etsy also sends them an email letting them know their download is ready.

Etsy will notify you about the sale, too. You can see the order in your Shop Manager, and Etsy can send you an email and a notification through the Etsy Seller app.

So if you’re selling a ready-made printable, PDF, spreadsheet access guide, or Canva template access PDF, you don’t have to manually send the file every time someone buys it.

That’s a big reason I like digital products.

You could be making dinner, taking the kids to soccer, sleeping, or doing absolutely nothing related to your Etsy shop—and someone can still purchase an instant digital download.

Current Etsy marketplace results show strong activity around digital planners, wedding and event templates, budget and debt spreadsheets, travel planners, student planners, teacher planners, digital stickers, Canva templates, and other productivity downloads. What’s popular can change, so research Etsy before deciding what to create.

Not necessarily, but you need to understand Canva’s current licensing and template-sharing rules before selling a design. Pay particular attention to any third-party elements, photos, graphics, fonts, or other assets you include in a product you’re selling.

AI can be a useful tool for brainstorming, organizing information, drafting instructions, researching ideas, and speeding up parts of your creative process. You still need to review the finished product, make sure it’s genuinely useful, verify accuracy, and ensure you have the rights to sell everything included in it.

I’ll do my best to keep this post updated! Etsy has made several changes recently, including adjustments prices. If you have any new updates, I’d love to hear from you. F
